Bedding: Is Cotton the Best Fiber to Use?

We spend much of our time in bed. It is estimated that we spend about one third of our lives in bed. Now whether or not that is a good thing it is still a significant portion of our lives. As such it is important that we make our beds as comfortable as possible. The most important determinant of this is the fiber that goes into the construction of the bedding. Various fibers will have different various characteristics when woven into a finished product.  The most common fiber used in bedding is cotton. This is because of its soft hand, durability, and easy cleaning. But cotton is not the only fiber that is used in bedding.

Another fiber that is often used in bedding is flax. Linen provides strength and durability to the fabric. It is also known to keep users cooler at night. While it might not be as soft as cotton at first, after a while of use the fabric becomes softer and more relaxed. Linen is most often used for bedding such as duvets and shams not so much for sheets, although that is not uncommon. While linen is strong it is not very elastic. This means that the fibers are prone to wrinkling and have a low resilience to folding. But linen does provide cooling properties and is anti-microbial which is beneficial for sheets.

             

         Flax

Silk

Silk is another common fiber used in bedding. Not only does it have a lustrous texture, but it is also durable. Fabric made from silk is resistant to dust mites, allergens, and bacteria as well. Sheets made from silk have the ability to warm the body in the winter but then cool it in the summer. While silk sheets are durable and luxurious, they are expensive. They are not always cost effective for people and so they are not as commonly used as cotton.

A good substitute for silk sheets would be modal fabric. this is made from Beechwood fibers. Not only does it have a soft hand, but it also has moisture wicking properties like that of cotton. It also has the breathability and easy cleaning that cotton does. It is a good substitute for silk sheets because it has the feel and look of silk. Modal is also fairly resistant to shrinking fading and pilling. While modal sheets are a nice balance between cotton and silk, they must be treated gently because they are prone to tearing.

    Bamboo

Another great fiber for bedding is bamboo. Similar to silk and model bamboo sheets offer cooling during news. Not only are they strong and durable but they are also soft and can absorb dye well. Even though they are durable they are also prone two wrinkling and require more gentle care. They can also be more expensive. Unlike many of these other fibers listed bamboo is also a fast-growing plant and thus a more sustainable product.

When thinking of bedding most people commonly think of cotton in its construction. While cotton is one of the most commonly used fibers for bedding there are still a ton of other fibers that can be used like flax, silk, modal, and bamboo. They all have different properties and characteristics making them unique and tailored to people's individual preferences. While cotton is the most common fiber it cannot be said to be the best fiber. Everyone is different and so different fibers are preferred by different people.
