Studio Remodel Week 3

This week we were able to continue our work in organizing the Interior Design studio. There were a few different things we worked on. The first of these was getting wood for the drawers underneath the workbench table. Professor Meissner was kind enough to allow me to take some wood from the shop to use for this. We now have the wood but we will need to cut it down into 6 15" x 1" x 3/4" strips for use. If necessary we can also paint them black if they can be seen underneath. 


Another area we started to work on and tackle was the stack of boxes behind the shelves. These boxes are full of samples that need to be sorted and organized. After class on Tuesday we took one of the boxes filled with fabric samples and sorted them into groups based on brands and collections. The samples had holes in them so we were able to hook the samples together using bead chains. This may not be how they stay but for now they are more organized and sorted than before. 

   

Along with obtaining the wood and starting to organize some more samples we also were able to get S-hooks and look into ordering some containers. The S-hooks are so that we can hang some tile samples so that they are not only more accessible but they also take up less storage space. The containers are going to be used for a variety of samples, from carpet and stone to certain fabric and textile samples. There will be multiple different sizes of containers to allow for a variety of sample storage. Until we get these containers and have shelf lining Rachel did a great job of organizing some of the binders and booklets in the closets. These might be moved later depending on how we store some samples but already the cabinet is more organized and accessible. 



While there is still a lot to be done with the studio there has already been many drastic improvements. This week there wasn't a ton of visible change but many steps were made that will show later. We got wood for the workbench, we made a small dent in sample organization, and we worked on getting containers. We will continue to work little by little until the studio is complete, making it the organized and functional space that it should be.

    Good job! One suggestion: arranging binders according to product type would be helpful, alphabetized by manufacturer name within each category:

    Kelly,
    This is a great update on the progression of the studio space. I think once we cut down the wood, we can start to arrange and fix the main desk that near us. I think we also need to continue to work through those boxes by the sink and organize them. I really like the progress being made with putting the small textile samples on chains to help keep them together. We might need to get more of those depending on how many small textiles we have.

We spend much of our time in bed. It is estimated that we spend about one third of our lives in bed. Now whether or not that is a good thing it is still a significant portion of our lives. As such it is important that we make our beds as comfortable as possible. The most important determinant of this is the fiber that goes into the construction of the bedding. Various fibers will have different various characteristics when woven into a finished product.   The most common fiber used in bedding is cotton. This is because of its soft hand, durability, and easy cleaning. But cotton is not the only fiber that is used in bedding. Another fiber that is often used in bedding is flax. Linen provides strength and durability to the fabric. It is also known to keep users cooler at night. Technical Polypropylene and Long Staple Cotton

 Textiles are an important part of design. They help create the atmosphere of a room and can shape a space into whatever the designer decides. Because there are so many different uses for fabrics there are many different types, all suited for various indoor and outdoor uses. These fabrics start out as fibers and filaments, that are twisted and woven into the products we see around us. Two of these fibers and filaments are long staple cotton and technical polypropylene. Long staple cotton is a natural fiber that once cleaned can be twisted into yarn. Cotton can come in two different sizes, long and short staple fibers. Staple fibers are usually measured in inches meaning they are already fairly short but there are still different lengths. Normal staple cotton fibers are around ¾ of an inch which means when it is twisted more cotton has to be added more frequently, making the yarn thicker.
