Carbon Leadership Forum
![]() |
Humans have always been conscious about their health and wellness. Today this consciousness has been expanded to include the wellness of people and the environment through buildings. As our technology and discoveries have grown and expanded, we now know that different materials and methods of production are harmful to not only us but the environment as well. While some do not consider the harmfulness of buildings to be anything serious, it is. What we do now affects the world we live in tomorrow. Many others have seen this and are starting to change the way we think about buildings and everything that goes into their creation. They have started to bring awareness to these concerns of health and wellness by creating various groups and certifications. One of these groups is the Carbon Leadership Forum.
The Carbon Leadership Forum is a group or architects, contractors, suppliers, engineers, and more that look to reducing the embodied carbon and its emissions in buildings and infrastructure. Embodied carbon is all the greenhouse gasses that are emitted from all stages of a building material, from harvesting to installation. The most common emission is carbon dioxide. The CLF (Carbon Leadership Forum) has five main values, determination, inclusion and collective action, empowerment, integrity, and transparency. The values of determination and transparency are especially important. There cannot be change if there is no drive to continue and without honesty there cannot be any good way to move forward.
The CLF focuses a lot on embodied carbon research and with that knowledge they then go out and collaborate with various architects, contractors, and engineers to act based on their findings. Their research is specifically focused on how to continuously reduce carbon emissions more. They seem to be very interested in the idea of collaborative work and networking. CLF wants to encourage and help people make decisions in design and construction that are carbon-conscious, but they can’t really do that without networking.
There is no doubt that we need to be more intentional in our designs and construction of buildings to not only better our health but also that of the world. CLF recognizes this but they also know that they cannot do it alone, no one can. That is why they are so focused on networking and collaborating. The more they do that the more people around the world will start to notice the impact embodied carbons in buildings have on the world.

Looks great- please add some personal information about Kate Simonen
ReplyDeleteKelly, this is a very good analysis of the Carbon Leadership Forum which I know is a common topic in the design world. CLF focuses a lot on research and collaboration with other architects and designers in order to further the discussion of eliminating carbon emission. Overall, it was a great review on the harmful effects that carbon emission has on the environment and how we as designers have to be better in our field. I have linked some articles that discusses even more the negatives of carbon emission.
